Ve preferred them to be brieferNevertheless they didn t stop me from enjoying the book as a whole and it s certainly a modern interpretation that I ll bear in mind as I begin transforming my notes into a full essay tomorrowwhich is totally not the reason I stayed up until midnight to finish this r anything A decent enough adventure yarn for the reader who s prepared to suspend a lot The Red Stockade of disbelief I felt it was spoiled by rather too many anachronisms eg rabbits and Norse place and personal names in the Iron Age Hebrides by the indiscriminate dumpingf modern anthropological parallels nto the past by projecting the bservations f Julius Caesar Strabo Tacitus etc n the Continental Celts in different periods to apply to Scotland to say nothing f the suggestion in the author s note f Iona as a centre The Something of druidismall a bitf a gallimaufry Irritating too is the gratuitous descriptions f sexual encounters Made me skip pages to get back to the real actionPersonal names are rendered phonetically this may be a help for folks who are unfamiliar with them but I felt that a pronunciation guide might have been useful And introducing a character by the name f Kaitlyn come n That goes iagainst i the phonetic spelling being itself derived from a mispronunciation f the Irish nameI think maybe I m just getting grumpy now for sword and sorcery fans OK but for those interested in closely researched historical fiction maybe not Enthralling and emotiveAfter reading Janet Paisley s White Rose Rebel I was eagerly awaiting her next novel Warrior Daughter than fulfilled my expectations It s a fascinating exciting story about Skaaha a real woman who lived A Killing Tide on the Islef Skye during the Iron Age Contrary to the custom Shivers: four in one: The Enchanted Attic/A Ghastly Shade of Green/The Locked Room - The Awful Apple Orchard of the time Skaaha and her younger sister Eefay were raised by their natural mother the warrior ueen KerrigenSkaaha is 11 yearsld when her mother dies and the foundation L'Oracle de votre subconscient : I-Ching, Le Livre des transformations of her life is ripped apart With the new warrior ueen hostile to them the sisters have to leave all they are familiar with Skaaha rejects Eefay s suggestion that they both live with her father and become warriors choosing instead to go with herwn father and become a blacksmith Numerous difficulties follow but accompanied by her aunt Jiya and guided by the druid Ruan she eventually settles in makes friends and begins to build a new life It is a life that will not remain peaceful and undisturbed for longForeign raids begin to threaten the population robbers invade homes and Weirdos of the Universe, Unite! Well worth a read I enjoyed it and it is much better than the last ne I read by this author On my way to Skye in 2010 to visit the site f Sgathaich s alleged fortress I called in at Culloden Battlefield s visitor centre and found Warrior Daughter Dead Man Riding (Nell Bray, on the shelves I was stunned because as far as I m aware Sgathaichr Sc thach written as Skaaha in the book for bvious reasons has not been featured in any ther novels and she so deserved a story f her wn On reading it I was further stunned by the authenticity Pontius Pilate of the writing and how Janet had thoroughly researched and imagined the mysterious matriarchal and druidic culturef the 1st century Following Skaaha from young girl to womanhood and all the rituals endured and battle skills developed was enthralling reading and not for the faint hearted I just love how after years Livin de Life of simply speculating what life must have been like in such times it was finally brought vividly to life by this very talented author and anyone who has an interest about Highland lifen the cusp Aeralis of the Roman invasion will undoubtedly treasure this workSgathaich features in Celtic mythology it s impossible to say whether she was a real woman even though the Islef Skye could be a derivative Be CentsAble: How to Cut Your Household Budget in Half of her name and she was the warrior ueen who taught martial arts to the mighty Irish mythological warrior C Chulainn With that in mind I sincerely hope that the author will write a seuel to the young Skahaa s story because to me it snly Janet Paisley who can truly do her story justice I loved this book It s a very powerful engaging view into ancient Celtic culture and a great action story too The detail Academic Inbreeding and Mobility in Higher Education: Global Perspectives of a culture that really isn t well known is very good and I found it provoking to think about how their world worked in comparison tours today I loved reading about an ancient matriarchal society You can see the subtle shifting Radio Crackling, Radio Gone of power within the book itself as men begin asserting their way This is a very well detailed book and Janet Paisley does not shy away from graphic description nor does she sensationalize it Be warned that there is a very disturbing rape scene which may trigger some people Everything is there for a reason though and this story is a powerful dynamic musingn the rise The Legend of Joaquin Murrieta: California's Gold Rush Bandit of Skaaha daughterf Kerrigan the Warrior ueen It s a coming Limey Gumshoe of age book uite unlike anyther I have read I highly recommend it Warrior Daughter confirms Janet Paisley as a high calibre writer Maritime Academy Graduate: Memoir Of A Third Mate of historical fiction Backed with detailed research this life storyf an Iron Age warrior is excellent When her home is lost the girl Skaaha chooses a new productive life working with iron As she grows up ignorant f the danger stalking her that is also cruelly disrupted The perennial themes f envy and vengeance make an engrossing exciting book set in a skillfully recreated Celtic culture Women in mythology and history particularly Celtic and Norse societies are ne f my special interests Tomorrow I m due to be drafting a research paper about them that I ve been working Dressed for Thrills: 100 Years of Halloween Costumes and Masquerade on So it s no surprise that I ve come across Scathach the mythological woman warriorn which this novel is based even though I picked this up from the library unaware that it was about her I expected the book to end with her conflict against her sister Aifa here rendered as Eefay but that would have meant bringing Cuchulainn into it Instead it told an earlier storyIt was a refreshing break because in this novel the women are very much in charge It s a matriarchy inspired by the mother goddess and there s no concept Harcourt School Publishers Collections of just a girl anywhere within the text Too rarely do I get to read something like thatFor me it was a little too explicit not merely in termsf sex though that was extensive and inordinately detailed but likewise in violence and depictions From Paella to Porridge: A Farewell to Mallorca and a Scottish Adventure of death There was also a brutal and detailed rape scene which I happened to be reading in school prompting me to angle the book away from anybody who might glancever my shoulder while I attempted to skim past it as uickly as possible I don t doubt that this is a fairly accurate portrayal On Toby's Terms of Celtic society which had nonef ur modern delicacy but it was enough to make me than a bit uncomfortable For sensitive readers I should warn that there is also fairly freuent bad language but these ARE warriors so what are you expectingIt was an interesting interpretation f familiar characters that was clearly well researched some Max Lerner: Pilgrim in the Promised Land of the sources she references are texts I m using for my essay which pleased me but certainly not something I d passn to say my mother to read as it would horrify her no end I enjoyed the parts that weren t about sex a great deal than the steamy scenes which read a little like an incredibly crude biology textbook a mixture f anatomical precision and bad language I felt rather that I d just been through sex ed advanced edition and would.
