The Kitchens of Canton by Isham Cook catapults the reader through time and space as our anti hero Jeff Malmuist finds himself in New Gary Indiana A provocative comedy of errors with hints of Hunter S Thompson and Kurt Vonnegut running through it this is a mind bending story that must certainly resemble an acid trip While a spiky enthralling commentary on the political meanderings of modern society Cook throws in a good measure of sexual romps androids and future realms that tax the brain Unless you can read various languages much of the book is not readable Breeze past that and there is rampant humor and human degradation Entertaining with a cutting edge this book is wildly different and not to be missed The Kitchens of Canton by Isham Cook is Science Fiction at its finest Jeff Malmuist is an inadvertent time traveller flung to the future to the distant past and to the future once again he struggles to navigate his new surroundings confused at which direction to take or when he will be next A labour camp for framed paedophiles a vast slave colony under ruthless Chinese rule and the actual Ancient Rome are all time periods that Jeff visits and to him the future looks bleak for the Western world But can things get any bleaker for JeffThis book is so mind bending so twisting and twisted and so so brilliant The plot is beautifully conceived and so well written which is probably not the easiest thing to with a non linear timeline Get ready for plenty of laughs plenty of non translated foreign language anyone speak Cantonese depressing futures particularly for America and heaps of raunchy sex scenes So baffling yet so oddly engaging I was wrong In my 2016 review of Isham Cook s At the Teahouse Cafe I predicted that our libertine writer s move away from the erotic was an attempt to transition into mainstream literary acceptance But Beijing based Isham noped out of any possibility of ever being read by Murican minivan moms when he decided to write his novel The Kitchens of CantonFreed by the constraints of non fiction Cook uses fiction less to tell a conventional story and as a psychic medium to transcend time continents languages dimensions and physical parameters His non linear narrative makes about as much sense as reading a Choose Your Own Adventure straight through while simultaneously snorting Chinese etamineKitchens is a 242 page mindfck induced most likely by a combination of LSD gender fluid sexual experimentation and unbridled brilliance Few lay readers will make it past the second chapter which is when Isham unrestrained by any semblance of editing begins weaving in foreign languages without translation or explanationXiansheng wo buzai zheli zheli zuo gongzuo she calmly told the man She pointed to a young waitress who had pulled out her breasts and beckoned him to the second floor Ta hui manzu nin Feichang gangxieAnd yet those who persevere through Isham s pataphysical delirium will be rewarded punished with an experience slightly less exasperating than Samuel Beckett s How It Is but far exhilarating than anything else currently being published in the American mass market This passage from Kitchens essentially sums it all upHave you ever been aware that you re having a dream Or woken up while you re still in a dream A dizzying whirlwind tour across language time and space Intentionally provocative and linguistically abstruse The Kitchens of Canton presents an eerie if not implicative vision of society s future A comedy of errors as the hero and his acuired companions skip temporally and spatially around the world from a couple. Jeff Malmuist is unaccountably catapulted to the year 2060 He finds himself in New Gary Indiana a labor camp of one million Chicagoans their identities hacked and incriminated as pedophiles through the collusion of a corrupt US Government the Russian cybermafia and China He escapes to Chicago only to find himself in a full scale replica of Ancien.

And occurrences that are in the news right now I must warn that there are cringe worthy material in here that makes this read so X rated and definitely unsuitable for readers of ages 17 and under There is a scene where Malmuist sleeps with a minor and then there is a scene where an old man is completely naked and his sexual part is tattooed The Kitchens of Canton by Isham Cook catapults the reader through time and space as our anti hero Jeff Malmuist finds himself in New Gary Indiana A provocative comedy of errors with hints of Hunter S Thompson and Kurt Vonnegut running through it this is a mind bending story that must certainly resemble an acid trip While a spiky enthralling commentary on the political meanderings of modern society Cook throws in a good measure of sexual romps androids and future realms that tax the brain Unless you can read various languages much of the book is not readable Breeze past that and there is rampant humor and human degradation Entertaining with a cutting edge this book is wildly different and not to be missed This book provides a sci fi distopian look at the past present and future of the world One man is the focus of the time travel that links the different places together and makes comparison possible The reader follows his journey through time and space and tags along on his adventures The story switches its setting often in both time and space and this is confusing but in a good way the reader gets to be confused together with the main character which makes for an interesting reading experience Unfortunately while the overall writing is good it feels that the story is left somewhat unfinished and many factors uite unexplained While I like the premise of the book that is unexplained time travel and the exploration of different cultures over time I was not prepared for the approach that would be taken to said exploration It might appeal to others but it was not to my taste at all and I found that it neglected interested facets that could have been expanded upon to the benefit of other overblown parts This is one of those difficult books that Im Not Millie! keep you thinking on the subject long after you ve gone through all its pages At least this is what happened to me The Kitchens of Canton is not an easy book to follow as it jumps from one scenery to another from one action to the next and even from one language to anotherWe have our main character Jeff Malmuist who is lost in time and space Somehow he is sent to different future scenarios in a world wither ruled by China or Ancient Rome He is trying to understand how he got there why and what is happening And I think that s the most important uestion this book is raising What is happening with us as humans what is happening with our society I see it as a raised flag towards what we see around us the amount of indecency flowing around and most importantly the lack of coherence The different languages used in the book may be confusing to us as well as to our main character We get to experience with him the puzzlement and the disturbing feeling caused by all the events The sexual content is on the highest level The intimate act is lacking emotion now It is simply something that must be performed for the happiness of our masters Huh ain t that funny I apologizeIsham Cook s story is not one to be taken lightly Society needs to shift its course towards the true values We need to be focused on the things and subjects that really matter Or else we become vain dump and mere slaves of our own misery I liked the approach I liked how it was put into pages 4 out of 5 stars. Now the American Special Administrative Region a vast Cantonese speaking slave colony Malmuist will soon be shipped to the most opulent city the world has evernown for an unspeakable fate A dystopian satire both bleak and funny The Kitchens of Canton distills the worst of our present and future societies into a strangely seductive maze of a sto.
Thousand years ago to a hundred years in the future wearing tunics that serve as two way radios as well as transporters If this weren t confusing enough the characters speak in Cantonese Italian Mandarin Latin Spanish and English I was taking the time to read all but the Chinese when I realized that I could just as easily skip those sections since the main characters didn t speak than one language apiece and were just as clueless as I Back to comedy then never mindit has to be experienced to be appreciated My descriptions cannot do than confuse the potential reader Patience and a spread sheet will reward one with a good read I said I was going to broaden my horizon when it came to my bookshelf and I have to say that The Kitchens of Canton by Isham Cook is like nothing I have ever read beforeIt goes way beyond the horizon I admit that sometimes I had no idea what was going on thanks to large chunks of dialogue written in different languages but it didn t really matter I could skim read these passages and get to the good stuff all the uicker and by the good stuff I mean sexand lots of it The future Isham Cook presents is pretty dark but at least there are no barriers and judgments when it comes to consensual sex There is humour but Cook also offers an insight in a potential future for this world it isn t so hard to imagine a world where China rules supreme when you consider the immense economic power they possess It s uite the scary thought as I would be hopeless in a work labour camp or as a slaveI m not sure I can adeuately explain the plot or this time bending and mind mashing but I do recommend it highly You will not forget this one in a hurry I promise you that A must read for all fans of dystopian fiction Not only is the plot imaginative and exciting but it is also so thought provoking you will have some serious uestions about your future Wow What an interesting steamy sometimes stuffy read this was Being a spiritual Christian I honestly felt overwhelmed with all the incidents of varied means of sexual intercourse this book contains I felt like the author must have a great deal of Salvation: A Novel (Salvation Sequence) knowledge about this lifestyle or whonows for him to write this type of content The main character is Jeff Malmuist who is a professor from Gary Indiana in the year 2015 He explains constantly to those he encounters in the placesperiods he gets magically transported to this and that he has to get back However as humorously as ever the women and men he comes across in such futuristic places as New Rome and Ancient Rome and New Gary Indiana USA only pounce on him like sexual beasts offering their privates and their organs to him for his and their pleasure lolWhat I disliked about this book was the whole future notions that the author gives his characters What I mean with that is that he infuses a lot of perverse sexual practices upon them that his entire idea of a futuristic world ruled by China it s the superpower in the future in this book just becomes stained by it all There are people who are ind of prudent about pornography and would like it to only be one s own private life instead of being discussed out in the open like Cook has done here It just muddies the story itself and distracts the reader from enjoying a good mind soothing book Then again I could be wrong and that Cook is only basing his treasure here on his personal experiences in Asia as he is said to be a resident there Also since I don t want to cause a stir with Cook himself I think the whole idea of this book is to make fun of the future of mankind with all the current shenanigans. T Rome in China erected for the wealthy country’s amusement and manned by a million enslaved Italians As he struggles to orient himself in these synchronized urban labyrinths he is plunged back to real Ancient Rome before being flung yet further into the future It’s 2115 and the Chinese Empire rules the world The former Western hemisphere is.
