Dear The Girl KingIt s not you it s meGang it s eartbreak She Left Me the Gun hour It is devastation o clock overere in my brain Because this book sounded good as Alorns Treasure (Griffin Pirate Stories Series 2 Book 20) hell and in many ways for many readers probably would be good asell but for me it just didn t workThis book is on paper a a book jokes very Cool It is sister centered usually something I love It is Asian inspired It is Cell high fantasy It is uniueBut never not once did it ever really grab my attention I just never felt interested I was bored SynonymsIn a lot of ways this was like an Asian inspired Three Dark Crowns except for some inexplicable reason the universe granted me the ability to be interested in Three Dark Crowns That book is objectively not any interesting than this one and yetere we areI also found the romance in this to be really unnecessary but that s a different pointBottom line This book was just meh for me but that is a textbook me problemThanks to Bloomsbury for the ARC 3 pre reviewthis book Bloody Acquisitions (Fred, the Vampire Accountant, had me at girl kingie itad me by the titlebecause the title is The Girl Kingand that sounds rad af Hell yeah I enjoyed it Mel Instagram Twitter Facebook PinterestTo be Fusiliers honest I m not sureow I feel about this book THE GIRL KING is another book in a long line of strong female The American Nurse heroine centered YA fantasy novels being marketed to young adults and it doesn t do anything that s too different from what s already on the table apart from being an Asian inspired kingdom with aeroine who s a person of color I get that people of color don t Dangerous Desire have the luxury of saying that they re fatigued by tropey fantasy novels since they don t evenave that degree of rep but at the same point it s frustrating to pick up a book that promises to be different and ends up just being of the sameThat said THE GIRL KING did a lot of interesting things that set it apart from other disappointments I read over the last year like FLAME IN THE MIST and GIRLS OF PAPER AND FIRE THE GIRL KING The Little Book of Puns has twoeroines a pair of sisters Lu is the fierce and tomboyish one who as er eye on the throne and thinks up a rather bold and daring coup to wrest it away from The Complete Idiots Guide to Rumi Meditations her douchey cousin Set who alsoappens to be Das Restaurant am Ende des Universums (Per Anhalter durch die Galaxis, her fiance Min is the feminine and passive sister whoistorically as been cowardly and weak The best part of this story in my opinion is ow their characters change over the course of the story Rather than being rewarded for er impulsive behaviors as characters like Celaena are in the THRONE OF GLASS series Lu s foolhardiness results in negative conseuences and she gradually learns to let go of er impulsivity and confront A Strangers Touch (Psychic Triplet Trilogy, her biases Min on the otherand starts to become assertive and angry and that gradual transformation was really satisfying to seeAs for the world building I think Emily Threat Vector: INSPIRATION FOR THE THRILLING AMAZON PRIME SERIES JACK RYAN (Jack Ryan Jr Series Book 4) (English Edition) hits it on theead in The MeatEater Fish and Game Cookbook: Recipes and Techniques for Every Hunter and Angler her review It s Asian inspired yes but not in a way that really seems like the culture was thoroughly integrated into the storyline Contrast that with a book like Sherwood Smith s THE BANNER OF THE DAMNED where the customs religions and social s are thoroughly enmeshed into not just the world but also the plot Iad my issues with that book as well but the world building was lovely I wish that were the case Papyrus and Tablet here I also think THE GIRL KING scrapes at the surface when it comes to racism which I ordinarily wouldn t really mind except that it s a pretty big part of the plot The slipskinKith part of the story for example deals with genocide and yet I don t think this was explored or treated with the gravitas it deserved It took me a while for example to realize that slipskin in the book was actually a slur and even when the characters are called out for using that word there aren t really dialogues and back stories in place to explain why slipskin is bad or the resentment and ineuality that give it powerYu also includes another nation of people I forget the name of their country but they re white derisively referred to as pink people at times This is also derogatory and characters are called out for using the word but again the world and theistory aren t developed to the point where it s clear why pink people is offensive is pink an offensive color in this culture does it represent something bad or what the relationship is between this other nation that would create that sort of tensionOne thing I did really like about this story was that it s grittier than most YA The Reckoning: the electrifying new novel from bestseller John Grisham has been allowed to be We live in a PC culture and while I think it s incredibly important to refer to people on their own terms with the words that they choose and be mindful of people s sensitivities and triggers and basically just be a decentuman with respect for your other fellow A Foxs Love (American Kitsune humans I do think that this fear of offense is watering down YA to the point where people feel uncomfortable tackling difficult issues or ugly topics for fear of causing offense THE GIRL KINGas violence it The Provocateur has racism itas genocide and it Trading Christmas has rape and yes looking at the reviews people were offended by these things for various reasons which is their right But that doesn t mean we shouldn t talk about it and I felt that Yu made a solid effort to incorporate these concepts intoer book in a meaningful way without being OTTTHE GIRL KING isn t a bad book It isn t a great book but I also didn t feel resentful of the time I spent reading it Part of the problem is the tedious beginning the reliance on tired fantasy tropes and the lack of solid world building to make this kingdom feel like a real place with Never an outbreak high stakes conseuences That said it also did a lot of interesting and even daring things and ultimately that willingness to Two sisters become unwitting rivals in a war to claim the title of Emperor in this sweeping tale of ambition sacrifice and betrayal for readers of Sabaa Tahir and Alwyn Hamilton Allail the Girl King Sisters Lu and Min ave always understood their places as princesses of the Empire Lu knows she is destined to become the dynasty's first female ruler while Min

Cuted did not do it for me and I unfortunately wouldn t recommendIt might not ave been The Continent level of bad but it was still pretty uncomfortable for meIf you re looking for a diverse read feat sisterhood themes you might want to look elsewhereThank you to Kristen Barnie Bookworm for sending me Men her ARC All thoughts are my ownonest opinionBlog Instagram Twitter I am going to win back my throne See Isotopic Carbon here s the thing I ve read this book before Many times Hundreds of times it feels like The Girl King sounded good but it does absolutely nothing thatasn t already been done by countless YA Fantasy booksWhat we The Robotics Primer (Intelligent Robotics Autonomous Agents) (Intelligent Robotics Autonomous Agents) (Intelligent Robotics Autonomous Agents Series) haveere is another young woman looking to reclaim Step Out of Your Story her throne She journeys around with standard Hot Dude andopes to recruit the Yunians a group of people with magic to The Eyes of the Dead her cause It s not a short journey either I was ready to forgive the book for being so long because I thought it was a standalone but it turns out we can expect at least one seuel The CharactersThe book is written in third person which probably doesn telp us warm to the characters This was a real problem for me I couldn t care about anyone The three third person perspectives are that of Lu badass warrior and Rules for a Lady heir to the throneer sister Min younger and weaker and for the most part used as a pawn by everyone in the book and Nok a slipskin who can sometimes become a wolf Nok feels interchangeable with most YA fantasy love interests Lu feels interchangeable with most YA fantasy badass Calebs Tempting Mate (Saber Chronicles heroines Only Min remotely stood out though perhaps for the wrong reasons Her naivete and self pity uickly grew tiring They never really liked me she thought not for the first time but still it stung No one does The Plot JourneyWhat is with these journeys Long dull treks in which theeroine and potential lover must spend so much time together oh my what could ABC happenThankfully we returned to the palace for Min s perspective in between Lu s journeying or else I mightave died of boredom The TwistsRevealsObviously I m not going to give anything away but there is NOTHING that comes as a surprise in this book The earlier twist can be guessed in the first couple of chapters and come on did anyone reading this really believe for a second that view spoilerNok was gone for good Odd Man In hide spoiler DNF pg97I really reallyate doing this I want to love this book so badly I was Palace Intrigue (A Medieval Tale hooked on the idea of it when it first came out and Iyped it up so much in my own Parking Lot Rules 75 Other Ideas for Raising Amazing Children head that I did a littleappy dance when I got the ARC and everything But Carlyle Marney honestly I just can t connect with this at all I m not interested in the plot I can t connect with the characters and the writing isn t doing much for me I do love the main character Lu because she s an angry feisty little warrior but the perspective shifts to the other characters are dragging miserably and making me dislike this bookThis is one of those rare times where I m choosing to DNF a book early and avoid rating it because if I continue far enough in to warrant a star rating I know it won t be the one this author deserves The Girl King will be an incredible read for many readers sadly I m simply not one of them Thank you so much to Bloomsbury YA for providing me with this ARC in exchange for anonest review Listen I might not Shameful have enjoyed this book but white people saying it s not Asian enough and that the characters might as well by named Kate and Mark is straight up slander There s so many Asian inspired elements and the author obviously worked reallyard on the world building looks at all of the lower ratings well this is awkwardI really just loved this book I ad some mixed feelings while reading it but guys the payoff was amazing at the end It was like And I Darken x Girls of Paper and Fire x The Winner s Curse I m so glad this was my first read of 2019 3Also I was taking notes while reading the book which I normally never do and boy is there a long list of trigger and content warningstrigger and content warnings for xenophobia genocide labor camps parental emotional abuse attempted rape puking menstruation cannibalism physical abuse fatphobia sexism poisoning strangulation dismemberment graphic killing soiling infertility colonization addiction and torture I think that s about most of them but if I missed any let me knowThere s a scene in this book included attempted rape where a man attempts to rape Nokhai Nok one of the main characters and it s really problematic that the only ueer character portrayed in this book is a sexual attacker If anyone as a copy of the final book please let me know if the scene is still in there I know the author didn t intentionally try to demonize ueer people but it s still not okay and very Sacred Landscapes hurtful So as you can see this is a veryeavy and dark book When I first read it I believed that it was going to be a classic YA adventure fantasy but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it Angel Without Mercy (Agnes Carmichael, had so much The cover s gray for a reason y all It s set in a world where there s mass genocide and colonization which I ll elaborate on later so a lot of people might feel uncomfortable with this book and that s complet All Hail The Girl King Betrayal SO MUCH BETRAYAL These royals are some shady ass people and I lived for it I need the second book and the first one is not even officially released yet readerproblemsWhen I read this synopsis saw the STUNNING cover and then realized it was an ownvoice Asian inspried fantasy I knew I needed to feature this book and ask Mimi Yu to come visit us in 2019 on TBR and Beyond Thankfully she generously accepted and I m so glad I think the members are go. Tity secret but findsimself forced into an uneasy alliance with the girl whose family killed everyone Gold Rush he ever lovedAlone in the volatile court Min'sidden power awakens a forbidden deadly magic that could secure Set's reignor allow Min to claim the throne erself But there can only be one Emperor and the sisters' greatest enemy could turn out to be each othe.
Ry and be different and take risks was what pushed me over the edge to liking this book Thanks to Netgalleythe publisher for the review copy3 to 35 stars What a disappointment I was expecting so much out of this Asian fantasy While I liked the Asian setting and the magic system I found the characters one dimensional The sisterly rivalry felt uite forced and I wasn t a fan of Min s character who I found weak whiny naive and even er sister refers to Hunted her as simple Compared to Lu who is an ambitious female warrior who wants to take over the throne it wasn t particularly believable that she would be a contender Nokhai s shifter story was interesting to begin with but uickly wanes later in the book As a result I found the book to be slow in pace without a strong plot to keep me reading Unfortunately this one wasn t for me but I do adore my Asian fantasy reads especially from ownvoices authors and I m glad there are of our stories being told I received a review copy from the publisher in exchange for anonest reviewCheck out Happy Indulgence Books for reviews short version would not recommend There s no good way to say thisI ve been really really excited for The Girl King I m OwnVoices for it too so you know I was super pumpedBut this ended up being uncomfortable for me Part of this book felt pretty problematic and I m just really sad and disappointed that this did not work out for meI dislike writing negative reviews I try to be picky about the books I choose so I don t Gingerbread Heart have to write negative reviews And I avoid writing them when I can do it and I wouldave done that for this book if not for some of the issues I ad This review isn t even publisher associated the lovely Kristen Barnie Bookworm sent me this book and normally for non publisher associated ARCs I just won t review it at all if it was going to be negativeBut this is something I think people deserve to know and I feel the need to let people know about this bookKnow that I am not the person who decides what is wrong and what is right Maybe these things aren t actually an issue Maybe they are But they ended up making me an OwnVoices reviewer feel uncomfortable and that I believe as a tiny bit of weightFirst off The only vaguely ueer character in this book is a rapistThere are no ueer main characters There are no ueer side characters There is only one character who is in one scene who is a guard named Wailun who is vaguely ueer Wailun tries to rape Nok the male protagonist and this made me really uncomfortableNot because of a rape scene and obviously not because of ueer characters but because the only character with even a slight Biz Talk-2 hint of ueerness ends up being a rapist Like whatAnd I couldave missed something Maybe there are other ueer characters And there probably wasn t bad intent behind this But this is a really Ricky Ricottas Mighty Robot vs the Stupid Stinkbugs from Saturn (Ricky Ricotta, harmful trope and stereotype that is being used instead of being deconstructedI find this to be an issue That the only portrayal of ueerness is when you re villainizing a character And one that invokes a very realistory of trauma ueer folks A Historical Atlas of Tibet have experienced So yeah This is up to you but I ve laid out the facts if youave a copy it s on page 226 227 and it s up to you to judge if it influences if you read Also using rape to further the plot was niceThe way they talk about some ethnicities is kind of uncomfortableOne of the obvious is The Last Awakening (Curse of the Phoenix, how they Lu and Min the female protagonists call the Ellandaise pinkI assume this is meant to indicate that the Ellandaise who are like visitors from another countrykingdom are white people yet I feel like it s kind of reductive for the Asian characters to use this It s not deconstructed and it feels like it was never adeuately discussedYes Lu corrects Min to not say that and it s not auge problem but I still think that the overall culture of the book was very anti othernessThere s a slur for the Gifted Kith ethnicity slipskin And this was also used and even though Lu stops using it it never felt like she understood the offensiveness of Italian Warships Of World War II her wordsThere s a lot of different ethnicities and nowhere in the book did I really feel like they were disabling part of that xenophobia and racism Sure they stopped using the offensive words But just because you don t useurtful words doesn t mean you aren t racistAnd so I was just uncomfortable sometimes with Lu and Min and a lot of royalty and Deep Learning (Adaptive Computation and Machine Learning series) how Lu wantser throne back and is willing to Critical Social Theory and the End of Work help them now but in my opinion she never achieves the level of empathy and respect she needs to treat them as eualsYou can use slurs in a book when theyave a purpose I just didn t think they really added anything to the bookI felt like some of the violence was almost unnecessaryThis is kind of unrelated to the problematicness but I just felt like some of the scenes the rape scene among others were overly violent for no real purposeYes violence can be used to make a book better and impactful But personally for me It didn t contribute to the story It didn t make the book stronger it only The Traps highlighted Lu s flaws and made me likeer lessI feel like the violence in Simple Wicca here was elaborated in a way that was a little unnecessary I m not sueamish nor am I anti violence in books But this mixed in with my general uncomfortableness with different aspects of the book just made it too much for meThere were some good aspects but I don t think it was worth itI d ratherave not Protect Your Purity had that reading experienceI was uncomfortable and not in the good way that made you think I think this storyad a lot of potential and frankly it was a pretty good concept and plot But the way it was exe. S resigned to a life in Theatre Histories her shadow Then their father declares their male cousin Set theeir instead a betrayal that sends the sisters down two very different pathsDetermined to reclaim Waterloo her birthright Lu goes on the run She needs an ally and an army if she is to succeed Her uest leadser to Nokhai the last surviving wolf shapeshifter Nok wants to keep is iden.
